Well it’s Friday, and it seems we are at the end of the road here during Road Trip Week at American Insurance Services Agency. As we have done all week, getting you the best rates on New Jersey auto insurance while answering some of the most common auto insurance questions we get when our customers travel on the road, we want to say thanks for coming along for the ride! The last question of the week is:
If I rent a car, do I need to buy extra New Jersey auto insurance?
Great question to end the week! Well the first thing you want to do is ask your agent if the coverage on your own car extends to car rentals. If your policy does provide such coverage, you probably won’t need to buy the rental company’s optional insurance!
Just make sure you understand the deductible and how it applies. Sometimes, depending what state you are in they allow a “waiver of deductible” coverage. Under this type of coverage, policyholders do not have to pay the deductible when they are in accidents that are not their fault.
Although this waiver may not necessarily apply to a rental car, so check with your agent.
There are some credit card companies that offer a waiver of deductible coverage if the entire car rental transaction is charged on the card. You might want to ask your credit card company if it provides this benefit.
Also why you are there ask them about “loss of use” coverage, too. This covers you in the event that the insurance company asks you to reimburse them for the amount of rental income lost while the car is under repair.
